The King Jaume I Prizes acknowledge people whose work is highly significant and has been carried out mainly in Spain. The awards are held on yearly basis and each category has a gold medal, a certificate and a monetary prize of 100,000 euros, of which winners are obliged to reinvest part of into research and entrepreneurship in Spain.

During the twenty-nine editions of the King Jaime I Awards, more than 130 of the most important Spanish researchers in the fields of science, technology and entrepreneurship have been acknowledged. Many of the winners have also received other important national and international awards throughout their careers.
The Award Winners are invited to join the High R&D Advisory Council (ACC) of the Valencian Government.
The ACC plays an advisory and consultative role in the Research, Development and Innovation policies developed by the Valencian Government and thus contributes to economic and social advances. Through the recommendations of its scientific members, the ACC disseminates scientific knowledge with the aim of informing and benefiting society, by holding congresses and seminars as well as publishing scientific works related to the Valencian Community, other Spanish regions, Spain on a national level and the European Union.
Jury Meetings
The King Jaime I Awards are notable for the excellence of its jury members, who are prominent figures recognized throughout the world for their achievements in the fields of science, culture and business. More than 55 Nobel Laureates have been jury members over the course of these years.
The jury meeting of the Rei Jaume I Awards is held in Valencia during the first week of June every year. For a few days many talented figures gather in this city. Prominent personalities, entrepreneurs and scientists, amongst which Nobel Laureates, participate in different activities such as meeting local researchers and students, visiting Valencian firms and research centers and attending cultural events.
The main events of the Awards, the Jury Meeting Day and the Announcement of the Winners, take place at Santo Domingo Convent in Valencia and at the Palau de la Generalitat.

Announcement of the Award Winners
The Jury Meeting Day program closes with the announcement of the winners in the Court Hall of the Palau de la Generalitat under the chairmanship of the President of the Valencian Government. Also present are the jury members, sponsors, collaborators, award winners and trustees of the King Jaime I Awards Foundation and of the Valencian Foundation for Advanced Studies.

La Fundación Premios Rei Jaume I convoca los Premios del mismo nombre que serán concedidos a aquellas personas físicas cuya labor haya sido altamente significativa en alguna de las siguientes categorías.
CATEGORÍAS
– Investigación Básica
Se concederá a la persona cuya investigación haya contribuido al desarrollo de la ciencia básica en España en cualquiera de los campos de la física, la química y las matemáticas.
– Economía
Se concederá a la persona cuya investigación en economía haya tenido un impacto de gran relevancia.
– Investigación Médica
Se concederá a la persona cuya investigación haya contribuido significativamente al desarrollo de la biomedicina o de otros campos de las ciencias de la vida.
– Protección del Medio Ambiente
Se concederá a la persona cuya investigación contribuya significativamente a la mejora del medio ambiente. Se valorará especialmente el estudio de las causas del cambio climático, sus consecuencias y las posibles soluciones.
– Nuevas Tecnologías
Se concederá a la persona que contribuya significativamente al desarrollo tecnológico en cualquiera de sus áreas, valorando el grado de innovación y su aplicabilidad.
– Emprendedor
Se concederá a la persona emprendedora que destaque por asumir riesgo como líder de un proyecto empresarial en funcionamiento, creadora de empleo y riqueza en su entorno, que sabe ver las oportunidades que otros no ven y orientada a satisfacer las necesidades de los clientes.
DOTACIÓN
Los premios son individuales y están dotados con:
– 100.000€, con el compromiso de destinar una parte del importe del premio a la investigación o al emprendimiento en España.
– Medalla de oro.
– Diploma.
CANDIDATURAS
Presentación Las candidaturas a los diferentes premios Rei Jaume I serán presentadas por un nominador, que deberá cumplimentar el formulario oficial disponible en esta web, incluida la razón de la propuesta, sin más documentación adicional.
Podrán nominar:
– Los premiados Rei Jaume I
– Investigadores
– Centros de investigación
– Centros tecnológicos
– Universidades (Facultades, departamentos, institutos…)
– Reales academias
– Colegios profesionales
– Hospitales
– Empresas
– Asociaciones empresariales
– Escuelas de negocio
– Fundaciones
– Los miembros de los jurados (excepto para aquel premio en el que participen como jurado) – Otras personas invitadas por la Fundación Premios Rei Jaume I
– Un mismo nominador -organización o persona- podrá proponer tantos candidatos como considere sin límite de número, pero no un mismo candidato a diferentes premios.
CANDIDATOS
Podrá ser candidata cualquier persona que haya efectuado la mayor parte de su actividad profesional en España y preferentemente que resida en España.
Los candidatos de años anteriores podrán renovar ellos mismos su candidatura durante 3 años, comunicándolo por escrito a la Fundación. Una vez trascurrido ese plazo, para volver a ser candidato deberá ser nuevamente nominado.
No se admitirán en ningún caso las candidaturas de:
– Premiados Rei Jaume I
– Miembros del Patronato de la Fundación Valenciana de Estudios Avanzados y la Fundación Premios Rei Jaume I
– Miembros del Consejo Asesor de la Fundación Valenciana de Estudios Avanzados – Personas que hayan sido miembro del jurado en los 2 años anteriores a la convocatoria vigente.
– Candidatos que solicitan un premio para sí mismos
– Candidatos a título póstumo
ADMISIÓN Y PLAZO
El plazo para nominar estará abierto desde el 7 de enero hasta el 5 de abril de 2021 ambos incluidos. Una vez sea recibida la nominación la Fundación contactará con el candidato para solicitar la documentación que deberá aportar en forma y plazo que le será indicado. La Fundación valorará el cumplimiento de las bases, podrá hacer una preselección entre las candidaturas que se presenten según sus méritos y el objeto de los premios. Los miembros del jurado tendrán acceso a todas las candidaturas. No se devolverá la documentación presentada.
JURADOS
Los miembros de los jurados serán designados anualmente por la Fundación Premios Rei Jaume I. Cada jurado tendrá un presidente y un secretario designados por la Fundación, que también podrá nombrar asesores en el jurado con voz pero sin voto.
Los miembros del jurado deberán estar presentes durante las deliberaciones. El voto de los jurados es indelegable. Las deliberaciones de los jurados son secretas. No se hará pública la relación de candidaturas ni se facilitará información sobre las mismas, únicamente se dará a conocer el nombre del ganador de cada uno de los Premios en el acto de proclamación que se celebrará en el Palau de la Generalitat al término de las deliberaciones. El fallo del jurado será inapelable.
ENTREGA DE GALARDONES
Los Premios se entregarán en un solemne acto que se celebrará en el mes de noviembre presidido por S.M. el Rey, en la Lonja de los Mercaderes de Valencia. Para recibir el premio los ganadores deberán estar presentes en la ceremonia de entrega y participar en el programa de actos.
Los Premiados:
– Impartirán una Lección Magistral si la Fundación Premios Rei Jaime I se lo solicita.
– Tendrán derecho a formar parte del Alto Consejo Consultivo en Investigación, Desarrollo e Investigación de la Presidencia de la Generalitat Valenciana
– Destacarán en su CV ser poseedores del Premio Rei Jaume I.
Who can nominate?
That person or institution to who the Foundation has invited.
Can I present myself?
No. A nominator is needed, independent to the candidate. Auto-nominations are not admitted.
As nominator, how many candidacies can I present?
The same nominator can propose so many candidates and to so many awards as he/she wishes.
How is a candidacy presented?
To present a candidacy the nominator must complete the available official form in the web www.fprj.es and that includes a brief critique of the “why” of the proposal. The nominator needs to include no other papers. To be a candidate only one nomination is needed.
Can I nominate the same candidate for different categories?
No, a candidate can only be it in one of the awards.
Is there any other way of supporting a candidate?
Yes. It is possible to send letter of support to the Foundation in favor of the candidate who you choose.
What happens in case that he/she has already been a candidate?
The candidates of previous years can renew themselves their candidacy without a nominator and for it, the first step they will have to do is communicate it to premiosreyjaime@fprj.es. But only during a maximum of 3 years after their first candidacy. Passed this time they will have to begin again and be nominated again.
What papers does the candidate present? Are they long or tedious of filling? Does it require a deposit?
The process is easy and free.
As soon as the nomination has been received, it will be the Foundation who contacts with the candidate in order to complete the necessary papers in the official printed matter and in the time period that will be indicated to him.
REWARD THE ENTREPRENEUR
What is rewarded: company or business project?
The target of the award to the entrepreneur is to recognize the task of the one who creates a new organization or inmoves in a radical way in an existing company, reinventing most of its products and processes.
Does the entrepreneur have to be young?
The age that matters the most is the one of the project and not so much of entrepreneur. For example, if it is a question of a company created by a scientist, it can happen once the scientific career has obtained a success. And the same in the case of women, whose professional trajectory can begin late or restart if she turned out to be interrupted for different extralabor motives.
New technologies or preexisting technologies?
It is not necessary that the business project is in an advanced technologies sector, although this is a general tendency at the present.
Does the company have to be big?
Not necessary. The dimension will depend much of the sector in which the company moves and of its trajectory.
Is it possible to present a business project that has not been initiated yet?
No, the candidate must contribute to the trajectory of the project successfully.
Can a businessman of second or third generation be a candidate?
Yes he/she can, if he/she has introduced very significant changes that define a new stage of the company or preexisting society.
